John Etienne Tobin papers, 1854-1857.

Business letter, 28 Dec 1854 (Blackville, S.C.) to Messrs. Fish & Robinson (Oglethorp, Ga.), re settlement of a debt, preferably with a draft on a bank in Charleston, S.C., or Augusta, Ga.; includes note from Capt. W.E. Smith, as well as another in hand of Tobin, "Capt. Smith as well as myself [are] anxious to have this matter closed up." Letter, 22 May 1857 (Blackville, S.C.) to Capt. S.S.Evans, addressed as "Dear Sovereign," re militia politics and his campaign to be elected brigadier general, reporting that the S.C. legislature would probably not support legislation to providing for creation of Aiken District, and announcing birth of a new baby in his family, "The mother thinks that like all the rest he is a most remarkable child, and the father is rather disposed to back her judgment in the matter," and remarking that Evans' sleep was presumed to be undisturbed by a crying baby.

A number of South Carolina militia units were adopted into the Continental Army. The 1st South Carolina Regiment, organized in 1775, consisted of ten companies. The Regiment was consolidated, although it retained its name, with the 5th Regiment, February 11, 1780 to consist of nine companies.
